What is a bridesman in a wedding?

by Paul Terry

A bridesman is a role that has gained popularity in modern weddings. Traditionally, the bridal party consists of female attendants known as bridesmaids, who support the bride throughout the wedding planning process and on the big day. However, as times have changed, many brides have chosen to include their male friends or family members in their bridal party as well. This is where the concept of a bridesman comes in.

A bridesman is essentially the male equivalent of a bridesmaid. He is handpicked by the bride to be a part of her special day and is typically someone close to her, such as a brother, cousin, or best friend. Just like bridesmaids, bridesmen play a significant role in the wedding festivities and offer support and assistance to the bride.

The duties of a bridesman are similar to those of a bridesmaid. They may help with various tasks such as attending dress fittings, assisting with wedding day preparations, and being a source of emotional support for the bride. Bridesmen may also participate in pre-wedding events, such as the bridal shower or bachelorette party, alongside the bridesmaids.

On the wedding day itself, a bridesman often walks down the aisle with the bridesmaids, either preceding the bride or following her. He may stand on the bride’s side during the ceremony, just like the bridesmaids, or can be positioned on the groom’s side as a special attendant. The specific arrangement can vary depending on the couple’s preference and the overall wedding vision.

When it comes to attire, bridesmen typically wear a suit or tuxedo that coordinates with the overall color scheme or theme of the wedding. While they may have a slightly different outfit than the groomsmen, they still complement the overall aesthetic of the bridal party. It’s important for the bridesman to feel comfortable and confident in his chosen attire while also adhering to any guidelines set by the couple.

Including a bridesman in the bridal party can add a unique and personal touch to the wedding. It allows the bride to honor her close male relationships and break away from traditional gender roles. It also promotes inclusivity and diversity within the wedding party, reflecting the modern values of the couple.

In my experience as a wedding consultant, I have witnessed numerous weddings where bridesmen have played an integral role. I have seen brothers stand proudly beside their sisters, childhood friends support the bride, and even male cousins take on the role with enthusiasm. The presence of a bridesman often adds a sense of camaraderie and support to the bridal party, creating a memorable and inclusive experience for everyone involved.

A bridesman is a male member of the bridal party who supports the bride throughout the wedding planning process and on the wedding day. He is chosen by the bride and typically fulfills similar duties to those of the bridesmaids. The inclusion of a bridesman adds a personal and inclusive touch to the wedding, breaking away from traditional gender roles and celebrating the close male relationships in the bride’s life.
